Student: If I push these pedals, will stuff shoot out of the sides of the piano?
Me: Um, no. Why in the world would you think that?
Student: I saw it in a cartoon one time.
One more reason to ban television, I guess.

Banning television, reason two.
Trying to get my 5-year-old student to try something new, and also wanting to make it sound enticing, I asked her the following question: "Madeline, could we try an experiment?" She looked at me, frowning. I asked, "Do you know what an experiment is?"
"Yes," she replied. "It's when something blows up."
