March 4, 2009 Successful Coexistence
My first day of two-classes-at once was today, and it went surprisingly well. The Creative Writing class worked independently, checking in with me a few times throughout the period. The AP English class was wonderful. I'd forgotten how stimulating it can be to work with students who are so incredibly bright -- and how challenging, too. I had to stop several times and look things up to make sure I wasn't leading them astray.
We had a rousing discussion about poetic meter and another about metonymy / synecdoche. They loved my example of "Get your butt in here!" Which, of course, really means "Get in here," and not just your butt. However, I am learning that that word can elicit giddy laughter from almost any age group.

Is this Emily who's coordinating 40 maxims? I'd love a pdf of your kathismas! I've been praying them for Lent and hope to keep it up even when Lent is over...
I happened to sit in on one of the language arts classes at my middle school when they were teaching a poetry unit. The teacher remarked, "it's funny when we talk about our butts," in reference to a Shel Silverstein poem...I guess things don't change much at the high school level...
